Another canister of illegal marijuana was taken from the seas on Sunday night when the Marine Police seized 90 pounds of the substance from a ship in Gordon Key, St. Andrew, about 7 o'clock.

According to the police, the substance, valued at more than $11 million, was the second such find for the year.

Focus on the south

The canister was found during a routine patrol by the Marine Police on the hull of a ship destined for Aruba.

For the upcoming year, head of the Marine Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Superintendent Marlon Dietrich, said the police would be focusing on the south coast of the island in their war against drugs.

"With the additional resources, our focus will be on the south coast, especially the guns-for-drugs trade between Haiti and here," he told The Gleaner.

He also said the police would be keeping a close eye on the Port Esquivel pier and Port Antonio, both in Portland. He said the police would also be watching Black River and Paratee in St. Elizabeth.
