West Indies' Daren Powell influenced the result with superb figures of three for four off four overs against New Zealand in the ICC World Twenty20 warm-up match yesterday. - file BENONI, South Africa (CMC):
Pacer Daren Powell crippled New Zealand's top-order batting and spurred West Indies to a 35-run victory in their latest ICC World Twenty20 warm-up match yesterday.
Fresh from their comfortable win over Kenya on Saturday, West Indies scored 150 for six off their 20 overs and then ripped out the Black Caps for 115 in 18.4 overs for a handsome win at Willow-moore Park.
The 29-year-old Powell influenced the result with superb figures of three for four off four overs.
Getting ready to face hosts South Africa in the tournament opener tomorrow, West Indies had an unsteady start when opener Chris Gayle retired hurt for five and they slumped to 22 for three in the fourth over.
With Devon Smith (0), Marlon Samuels (14) and Dwayne Bravo (0) gone, captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Smith staged a mild recovery before Sarwan fell for 18 off 20 balls.
But Smith dragged his side out of deep trouble with a critical knock of 47 off 46 balls with two fours and two sixes. He added 55 for the fifth wicket with Narsingh Deonarine, who lashed 34 off 26 balls with five boundaries.
Wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin contributed a fiery 12-ball unbeaten 26, with four fours and one six to boost the Caribbean side's innings at the end.
When New Zealand began their chase for 151, they wobbled to 44 for four after Powell rattled their frontline batsmen.
Windies pumped up
The Windies were pumped up from the start when Fidel Edwards had Brendon McCullum caught behind off the first ball of the innings.
Coming off his debut season in English County cricket with Hampshire, Powell gave his side control early. He had Lou Vincent caught in the fifth over for two and then dismissed Ross Taylor (2) leg before wicket and Scott Styris (4) in successive overs.
New Zealand were unable to recove Peter Fulton got a sturdy top score of 51 from 43 balls, and captain Daniel Vettori, a fighting 24 off 16 balls. They were the only New Zealand batsmen getting to double figures.
Medium pacer Darren Sammy provided excellent support for Powell with three for 21 off three overs, and Bravo (2-28) also got among the wickets.
In other warm-up matches, captain Graeme Smith (89 not out) and A.B. de Villiers (65) propelled hosts South Africa to an eight-wicket whipping of favourites Australia, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets with Salman Butt hitting 51, Kenya beat Bangladesh by six wickets with one ball to spare, and Zimbabwe were five-wicket winners over Scotland.
